Easy Tips For Caring For Your Tank
Before you dig yourself into how to take care of your saltwater tank you should separate the things that need to be done into daily, weekly and monthly tasks. By doing this you will be more efficient in your aquarium care as opposed to trying to get it all done one day a month. Its just not going to happen that way!
Here is a break down:
Daily Requirements
-
The fish must be fed "NOT OVERFEED!"
-
Look at your fish and make sure you don't see any signs of disease, injury and or stress
-
Make sure all your fish are accounted for and remove any that may have died
-
Look at the tanks temperature and make sure its in a safe range
-
Make sure all you filters and pumps are running properly
Weekly Requirements
-
Add freshwater to replace any water that has evaporated
-
Clean your tank with safe solutions
-
Using a magnetic cleaner clean the glass on the inside of the aquarium
Monthly Requirements
-
Perform 20-25% water changes, this can actually be done in two smaller changers if you have a large tank
-
Clean the tanks gravel by vacuuming it when taking out old water, if you have fine live sand as I do I find it easier to hold my hand closer to the end of the suction and lightly sift it with my hand while slightly brushing the surface. You don't want to suck up all your live sand.
-
When cleaning your filters use old water to rinse then replace
-
Make sure you use your test kits to monitor your water conditions
